A Work in Progress.
BY: KEVIN KNIFFIN
The report lists the top 50 national universities as ranked by US News and World Report, specifying the corporate board positions held by each university's president. In addition, presidential salaries are listed as well. For the weary-eyed, I suggest searching for your school name (using the "Find" or "Where" functions).. Note that appended to the "top 50" are a collection of other schools, which includes a listing of Multinational Monitor's 1995 and 1996 Ten Worst Corporations and any university ties uncovered in those corporations, followed finally by a listing of other noteworthy corporations. Be aware that this database is not exhaustive; instead, it is intended as a tool to stir debateConfirm all information with the interested parties. This task is facilitated by the listing of phone numbers. n.b., join the increasing number of schools that want to Forget the US News and World Report rankings (FUNC)!
HOW TO do your own investigation:
1) Get a biography from your university - board positions
are likely listed (with pride) as "service."
2) Check out the Securities and Exchange Database at http://www.sec.gov for the corporations on which your president serves. Search the EDGAR archives by company name. 3) Tease through the most recent DEF 14A form and look for "Director's Compensation." Look also for stock options given to Directors. Note as well that once you get one board position, you can probably figure out the other Directorships held by an individual they are usually listed in people's biographies. To do a more exhaustive search, Lexis/Nexis has a great search engine but it's not especially accessible. 4) Call your president and ask how many meetings (s)he attended last year from this you'll have an even higher and more accurate account of outside earnings. Ask some fun and poking questions, then point out some university problems that are not being addressed while the president reaps personal rewards. Ask who is responsible for approving outside positions that provide financial remuneration. Ask how much stock the university owns in companies on which the president is a Director. Or how much business the university does with the company. Don't back down if they get snotty you're in the right. You are also in the special position of being most able to get a response. Presidents will only talk to people about this if they "need" to (i.e., they don't need to talk to reporters from the Multinational Monitor as much as they need to talk to students that either pay tuition or have parents that pay tuition. You are your president's constituency. SAMPLE Questions for Presidents: Questions for Businesses: 5) Congratulations. Once you submit your report to a local paper, you'll have garnered the title muckraker. With help from others, it should become an issue in your neighborhood and merit dialogue (and increased investigation) that ultimately results in positive change. Email me and I will add your work to this page. |
source: President salaries according to survey from
Chronicle Of Higher Education. Listed is the 1994-95 salary plus benefits.
Note that raises happen so much that numbers are likely strong underestimates.Other
information is from files of the Securities and Exchange Commission and
official biographies.

California has conflict of interest law for all state employees. Participation
on outside boards must be reported. But, UC officials are required to report
to office of president president, which in turn is accountable to the board
of regents and reviewed by legal counsel of UC vice-chancellors on up.
UC spokesperson says the attitude is one of encouragement, to increase
exposure of university, esp when private industry boards are in consideration,
eg. Chuck Young has been on the board of Intel since the company was created.
This exposes intel and university to all sorts of research, especially
high-tech, and acts as a conduit between the two.
Wells Fargo holds the UC employee account. The account predates Tien's
service on Wells Fargo's board. The account is serves 136,000+ employees
amounting to 1.5 billion annually. Former Chancellor Tien remains on faculty
of engineering at berkeley Wells fargo chosen how? Counsel opinions made

contact him at 847-491-2838, [email protected] and ask for his response
to letter from the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union (OCAW) letter.
What is his motivation to serve on board Jacobs told me little except
that "this is not a university relationship. I had it before the deanship,
when I was professor at Northwestern. (Since 1972.) I probably would have
been a senior officer somewhere [if I wasn't a professor here]..... OCAW
is opposed to oil industry investments overseas. Any american company
gonna do what's best for their shareholders within the law.... I certainly
wouldn't jeopardize my feelings about myself. I am very upstanding person.
.... You have committed a sin. Giving another lie doesn't help. see the
attached letter for my response to the interview he "allowed"
me.

ACTIONS

Letter writing campaign to person in question -- call
for the officer's resignation from either the university
or the company!
Letters to your student newspaper
Protests at public appearances of the President/Professor
Hunger Strike outside the President's Door
Organize a coalition of community/student groups to call for the resignation
Below is an example of an action (and call for action) against a University
Dean serving the shareholders of Unocal. The letter resulted from a phone
call made to follow up on a letter written by the Oil, Chemical, and Atomic
Workers Union in order to pressure comment from Unocal's outside Directors
on their company's involvement with the State Law and Order Restoration
Committee in Burma. The following letter also made its way to the Free
Burma Coalition list-serv, over 20 reporters in the Chicago area, and the
corporations list-serv.

Dear Mr. Jacobs,
I am writing with regards to our unfortunate phone call on July 16, 1997.
I am writing to request an apology for the insults you directed on me.
During our conversation, you started to feel uncomfortable about the questions
I asked regarding Unocal's involvement with the SLORC dictators. From this
position, you eventually went on to attack me personally. First, you called
me a liar for not identifying one of my other roles in my presentation
to you. Specifically, I told you "I am a reporter for the Multinational
Monitor, and I would like to ask you" You objected and said I should
also have added that I am a graduate student in anthropology.
This is a bogus request, based on a naïve understanding of personal
interaction. Or it is a rather perverted way of avoiding uncomfortable
questions.
Professor Jacobs, do you introduce yourself on the first day of your classes
as a Director of Unocal? Do you introduce yourself to your students as
a Director of the other companies whose boards you serve? Professor Jacobs,
do you make it a common practice judging people as sinners?
Remember, in our conversation, you said that I "have committed a sin"
by not telling you of my other role as graduate student. Working from a
Christian premise, which served your purposes in your insult, you will
be wise to know that Jesus Christ had harsh things to say about people
calling others sinners.
Finally, Professor Jacobs, what do you really think about your company's
involvement with the State Law and Order Restoration Committee in Burma?
As our phone call began, I, along with many others, would appreciate a
simple response to the letter you received from the President of the Oil,
Chemical, and Atomic Workers (OCAW) union. You admit that it is your place
as a Director to have such an opinion, so I ask: please share your perspective.
Perhaps you can educate me on this issue.
Note that I am sending carbon copies of this letter to your supervisor.
That is, your supervisor in your role as Dean at Northwestern.
Sincerely,
Kevin
